Carat is weight. Here's what it looks like.
A carat is 0.2 grams. It tells you how heavy a diamond is, not how wide. Tap a weight to see a round brilliant's face-up size, then jump straight to stones in that range.

Buying smart
Weight is only one of the four Cs.
01
Buy just shy of the mark
Prices step up at round numbers. A 0.95 ct looks the same as a 1.00 ct on the hand, and usually costs noticeably less.
02
Cut sets the size you see
A deep, poorly cut stone hides weight underneath. An excellent cut spreads it across the top, where it catches the light.
03
Shape changes the spread
Ovals, pears and marquises face up larger than a round of the same weight. Compare shapes →
